90 minutes of screen time per day can negatively impact your child’s development

University of Canterbury researchers analyzed data from over 6,000 children in New Zealand, studying the effects of screen time on early childhood development from 9 months to 8 years old. The study found that higher levels of screen exposure, including direct use (TV or devices) and indirect exposure (TV on in the background), were linked to poorer language, literacy, and numeracy skills, as well as increased peer-related problems by ages 5 and 8.

The study found that higher levels of screen exposure, including direct use (TV or devices) and indirect exposure (TV on in the background), were linked to poorer language, literacy, and numeracy skills, as well as increased peer-related problems by ages 5 and 8.

Excessive screen time was also associated with reduced participation in socially and sensory-rich activities, such as playgroups, museums, and parks, which are vital for childhood development. The researchers emphasized that early childhood is a critical period for forming healthy habits, and reducing screen time can positively influence long-term health and well-being.

The findings align with New Zealand’s Ministry of Health guidelines, which recommend no screen time for children under 2, less than one hour per day for ages 2-5, and less than two hours per day for those aged 5 and older. This research supports continued adherence to these guidelines and may inform future screen time policies.

While the World Health Organization recommends no screen time for children under two and less than an hour daily for children aged two to five. Experts call for caution, citing additional research and emphasizing the importance of limiting screen time to promote healthy development.
